Why “Looking Pro” Matters for Business
I’ve spent 26 years lighting stages for artists like Bring Me The Horizon and shows for the BBC . In TV, lighting isn’t just about visibility; it’s about mood.
But in business video, lighting has a different job: Credibility.
If you are a Wealth Manager or Consultant, a dark, grainy video subconsciously tells the viewer: “I am not detail-oriented.” A clean, well-lit shot tells the viewer: “I am professional, organised, and open.”
The “Tripod” Lighting Setup (You Can Do This at Home)
You don’t need a gaffer truck. You just need to understand three angles:
- The Key Light (45 Degrees): Your main light. Put it slightly to the side of your face, not dead centre. This creates gentle shadows that define your features.
- The Fill (Reflection): If the shadows are too dark, use a white wall or a reflector on the opposite side to soften them.
- The Back Light (Separation): A small light behind you (or a window) to separate your shoulders from the background. This stops you looking like a “floating head.”
Summary
You don’t need to be a cinematographer. But you do need to respect your audience enough to be seen clearly. Good lighting is the cheapest way to upgrade your personal brand.
